TI Adds Low-Power DSP

October 30, 2006
Unleashed as the lowest-power addition to the company's line of programmable digital signal processors, the TMS320C5506 DSP requires just 0.12 mW of power in standby mode at 108 MHz and 1.2V. Core and memory operating power is 58 mW at 108 MHz. For programming ease, the chip provides 128 KB of SRAM and a full-speed USB 2.0 interface. Other features include three MCBSP ports, three timers, I2C bus, 6-channel DMA, 16-bit EMIF, and 36 GPIOs. For development support, the TMS320C55x Power Optimization DSP starter kit (DSK) provides power-planning tools that allow users to create trial configurations for determining power consumption for various memory and peripheral combinations. Available in a 12 mm x 12 mm microBGA package, price for the TMS320C5506 is $5.75 each/10,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
