DPS Controller/Monitor Includes PMBus
August 2006 Issue
Published Date: August 21, 2006
Embarking as the first chip to convert an analog power supply to a programmable digital supply, the MAX8688 digital power supply (DPS) controller/monitor integrates a PMBus to manage up to 127 power supplies on a single bus. The chip closes a slow loop around the power supply to set the output voltage. By tapping into the enable, feedback node, and/or reference input, it provides tracking, sequencing, and fine setting of the output voltage down to ±0.2% accuracy over the operating temperature. A MAX8688 system can prevent field failures and potential recalls by allowing remote access to the unit for programming the output voltage down to 500-µV steps, and/or the sequencing, tracking, and fault/warning thresholds. For design relief, a graphical user interface allows users with no knowledge of digital-control theory or how to write software/firmware to implement a digitally programmable power supply. Available in a lead-free, 24-pin 4mm x 4mm TQFN package, price starts at $1.95 each/10,000. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
