Optical Fiber Connector Saves Space
May 2004 Issue
Published Date: May 03, 2004
A new optical fiber connector has been designed at about half the size of its predecessor. Borrowing features from the RJ 45 connector, the new Simplex LC type optical fiber connector uses about 50% less space than the SC type connector. Designed for premise wiring applications and employing an RJ 45 type latching, the LC connector emits an audible sound when properly mated. Keying prevents rotational misalignment. LC type connectors can be used in LAN, MAN, and WAN applications and since the LC fits into the RJ 45 footprint, updating equipment from copper to fiber is possible. Pre-assembled with ferrule included, the LC connector comes in single-mode or multi-mode. Maximum insertion loss is 0.4 dB with a minimum return loss of 40 dB in single-mode. The multi-mode version has a maximum insertion loss of 0.3 dB and a minimum return loss of 22 dB. Each connector has 1.254 mm Zirconia ferrules and supports 1.6 mm and 2 mm cable types. The LC type connector meets or exceeds Telcordia GR-0326-CORE Issue 3. JST CORP., Waukegan, IL. (800) 947-1110.
