Chip Revs Up Development Of Dual-Mode 3G Handsets
March 2003 Issue
Published Date: March 01, 2003
The SPINNERchip 1.0 WCDMA baseband processor in a 10 mm x 10 mm LFBGA allows terminal manufacturers to re-use existing GSM/GPRS hardware and software when converting to dual-mode GSM/GPRS and WCDMA systems. Based on an ARM7TDMIS microcontroller, the processor integrates all functions required for WCDMA operation, including support for WCDMA ciphering, a programmable analog I/Q RF interface, and an optional USIM interface. It also includes all PHY layer and Layer 1 firmware and can interface with a variety of third-party UMTS protocol stacks. A unique approach to using the standard memory interface allows the device to interface with the majority of existing GSM/GPRS baseband chips with minimal re-design to add WCDMA capability.
