DC/DC Operates In Many I/O Conditions
March 2003 Issue
Published Date: March 01, 2003
Ready for use in cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and USB-powered devices, the MCP1601 500 mA, dc/dc synchronous step-down converter is said to be capable of operating over a multitude of input and output (I/O) conditions. Operating in three modes, the device automatically switches among them to follow a maximum efficiency curve for the given I/O condition. Operating modes include pulse width modulation (PWM), pulse frequency modulation (PFM), and low-drop-out mode (LDO). Input voltage ranges from 2.7V to 5.5V and output voltage range is from 0.9V to VIN for the input voltage. Typical shutdown current is less than 0.1 µA and load current is up to 500 mA continuous. The device will operate at 100% duty cycle or in LDO mode when the input voltage approaches the output voltage. Other features include over-current, over-temperature, and under-voltage lockout protection The under-voltage lockout range is between 2.4V and 2.7V. Available in an eight-pin MSOP, price is $1.85 each/1,000. MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY INC., Chandler, AZ. (480) 792-7668.
