Ultra-Bright LEDs Replace Incandescent Bulbs September 2002 Issue Published Date: September 01, 2002
A new series of very bright LEDs has been developed to replace incandescent lamps in automotive and outdoor display applications. Designed in red, blue, yellow and true green versions, the LEDs in the TLC series reach brightness levels as high as 20,000 mcd and are effective for use in central, high-mounted stop lights in automobiles and for outdoor applications, such displays, lighting systems, and traffic signals and signs. Available in ultra-bright AllnGaP red and yellow and InGaN blue and true green versions, the TLC LEDs also offer a choice of 8° or 18° emission angles, as well as in a multitude of luminous intensities. The 8° LEDs combine the levels of light output from 2,000 to 20,000 mcd, while the range for the 18° LEDs is 1,500 to 11,000 mcd. The TLC series has an untinted, non-diffused lens with a diameter of 5 mm. Reverse voltage for all devices is 5V, with a maximum dc forward current of 50 mA for red and yellow and 30 mA for blue and true green devices. To ensure reliable operation, ESD protection is 2,000V, and maximum junction temperature is 125°C for the red and yellow LEDs, and 1,000V and 100°C for the blue and true green LEDs.
