Chipset Powers Internet-Ready Cordless Telephones

A new generation of 900-MHz narrowband dual function, Internet-enabled, cordless telephone technology, developed around a chipset designed by Atmel, has resulted in the SurFone, claimed as the world's first cordless telephone featuring the convenience of a standard modem/phone jack located in the handset allowing notebook PC users to connect to the Internet without wires. By simply connecting a V.90, 56k or earlier model modem to the phone jack from any location within range of the base station and dialing the ISP of choice, the user can surf the net, read e-mail, and more.
ThinkCore Communications developed this cordless phone was around a chipset specifically designed and manufactured by Atmel and is offering a complete reference design suite, under license, to OEMs. An evaluation kit is also available to aid product development.
